Image size refers to two main aspects of an image: its dimensions (width and height in pixels) and its file size (storage space in KB or MB). Understanding both is crucial for web design, social media, printing, and digital storage.
Width × Height in pixels (e.g., 1920 × 1080). This determines the resolution and display quality of your image.
Storage space in KB/MB (e.g., 2.3 MB). This affects loading speed, storage requirements, and upload limits.

Enter width and height manually to calculate total pixels and estimated file size
| Use Case | Recommended Resolution | DPI/PPI | File Size |
|---|---|---|---|
| Web Display | 72-150 DPI | 72-96 PPI | 100-500 KB |
| Social Media | 1080-2048 px | 72-96 PPI | 200 KB - 1 MB |
| Print (Standard) | 300 DPI minimum | 300 PPI | 2-10 MB |
| Print (High Quality) | 600 DPI+ | 600+ PPI | 10-50 MB |
Upload your image to our calculator, and it will instantly display the dimensions (width × height), file size, aspect ratio, and format. You can also right-click the image file on your computer and select "Properties" or "Get Info" to see basic information.
Image dimensions refer to the width and height in pixels (e.g., 1920 × 1080), while file size is the amount of storage space the image occupies (e.g., 2.3 MB). A larger dimension doesn't always mean a larger file size due to compression.
Multiply the width by the height. For example, an image that is 1920 × 1080 pixels has 2,073,600 total pixels (1920 × 1080), or approximately 2.07 megapixels (MP).
For web use, aim for images under 500 KB with dimensions of 1920 × 1080 px or smaller. Use WebP or optimized JPEG format for best performance. Larger images slow down page loading and affect SEO.
Use our Compression Calculator to optimize your images. Convert to WebP format, reduce quality slightly (85-90%), or resize dimensions while maintaining aspect ratio using our Resize Calculator.
For standard printing, use 300 DPI (dots per inch). For a 4×6" print, you need at least 1200 × 1800 pixels. For an 8×10" print, use 2400 × 3000 pixels. Higher quality printing may require 600 DPI or more.
